My New Zine!!!

Finally, my zine is done! It is called Femme, and it is a collection of illustrations and comics that concern all the complexities of being a girl! Insecurity, crushes, heartbreak, love, humor, and beauty, all drawn by me in this wonderful little 14 page volume.

This is something I have been dreaming up for years and years and freakin' years. I have had some version of it in my mind the whole time, stirring around. What kept me from doing it until now? Probably my crippling perfectionism that makes me loathe the idea of doing something if it isn't exactly the way I pictured it. Well lately, I have been fighting that kind of negativity! I need to stop looking at every piece of art I make as if it's the last thing I'll ever make. It's terribly romantic I suppose, but it only leads to not making half the things I think of because I'm unwilling to budge from the original idea! This is not a good way to make art I've decided. I have to start living in the moment and going with the flow!

So I made it, and it turned out more lovely than I could have imagined. And it's only Volume I, so in the next one I can put in all the things I didn't get to put in this one! This zine is very special to me, and now it represents my strength in getting over my insecurities and fears about my own art!

It's availiable for sale in my Etsy shop :)  (link over there --->)

Joanna Newsom

Joanna Newsom is not only my favorite artist, she is the only artist I listen to anymore. Nothing else seems good enough anymore!

I love every second of every single one of her songs, but
My top three favorite songs are:

Only Skin
Monkey and Bear
Emily

Maybe that is because they are some of the longest?

This is a wonderful performance:

Just wanted to take the time to post about her since she is inspiration behind every bit of art that I make!

Customized Illustration

Here is a customized illustration I did for a customer named Cathy, a photographer. She wanted me to change the hair from red to black, and the dress from blue to olive green. I think it turned out super cute, better than the original! I love doing customized illustrations, especially when the buyer sees themselves in the art!

More Sketchbook Pages

This is a series of comics I made a few years ago in my sketchbook. Angie is kind of my alter-ego in child form. And Timmy - well, we all know a Timmy or two don't we?

Strangers in Paradise

One of my new favorite things: Strangers In Paradise!

This is a very popular series of graphic novels by Terry Moore. I have been reading them and am OBSESSED with the characters. They call this the comic book for people who don't read comics because it is so easy to read and get sucked into. But for people like me who are already entralled with comics of all kinds, this one is a jackpot. Okay, it's very girly at first glance, but it's also action packed so I think guys who give it a chance will really like it too.

I've recently gotten a Xyron 500 sticker machine, and I have become OBSESSED with making my own hand drawn stickers.

You can find them all here in my Etsy shop : http://www.etsy.com/shop/ChelseaDonovan?section_id=10261011

Sketchbook Pages

I am beginning the process of scanning and editing all my favorite pages from my piles of sketchbooks from over the years. I am planning on putting together a collection of them in a book, but first I am going to digitally edit and color them.

These are a few of the original scanned pages, pre-editing.

New Digital Illustration

This is my latest illustration, which I call "Penny". She loves to crochet with plarn, hates orange flavored things, and is has a subscription to Geology Today.

Speaking of plarn, here is a good site for some inspiration:  my recycled bags .com

I am excited about this illustration, as it is one of the first few successful drawings I've done lately that have been completely done with my Wacom digital writing tablet. I have been using it to color and edit original ink drawings for months, but kept feeling too shaky when trying to create illustrations directly from hand to computer. Looking at the screen while your hand draws on the tablet in front of you takes time to get used to!

I think I've finally gotten the hang of it in a way where the outcome looks almost indistinguishable from the look of my non-digital pen drawings, which is what I've been wanting.

New Art - Awkward is Wonderful

Lately I have been inspired to draw awkward, geeky, nerdy, wonderfully interesting characters. Each character has a story that evolves in my mind as I'm drawing them. I think my obsession with these dorky people comes from my own socially awkward nature. Each of my nerdy friends have a special place in my heart!
